It has been a while since I have previewed any music, but here is one which I have been digging lately. The problem with a lot of clubby electronic music today is that artists don’t spend enough time developing them before releasing them. So a lot of it sounds very formulaic. It’s actually quite hard to create an album lasting over 45 minutes with just 4/4 rhythms going thump-thump-thump, and if you live outside England, then in my opinion it’s even more difficult. Although it’s catching up, Europe just doesn’t have the clubby culture that built up the electro scene in the 90s where DJs and artists had to compete with each other in raves and danceclubs for sophisticated punters.
That said, Mayer is a prolific DJ and artist from Germany and his album is a balance between electro dancefloor pop and cool programming. If I had to compare this other artists, I’d say it is an updated, trendy version of St. Germain with sophisticated, clean programming. It can sound good in a car or in a club.
I like my electronic music with more edge and flair, but I do dig his cool, understated programming.
